Providence Park Hospital: - I volunteered at Providence Park Hospital in the summer of 2018 as well as the summer of 2019.
- I was responsible for things such as checking inventory in each room within those wings as each room required certain medical supplies and amounts.
- I would also answer call lights of patient's, getting them water, helping them order food, or getting their nurse for them.
- One of my favorite parts about volunteering was sitting and talking to the patients. Nurses would often send me to patients who didn't have many visitors, I would sit and talk to some patients for hours at a time.
PEERS: - PEERS is a school program that allows students to join a class with other students who are cognitively impaired or have a learning disability and help them through the hour.
- I was in this program sophomore through senior year in high school.
- In my first 2 years I was placed with students with learning disabilities where I would take notes for them and help them keep organized and on task.
- My senior year I was placed In the CI (cognitively impaired) room.
- Here I would help the students with simple math and reading skills. Which included math card games and worksheets, as well as reading out loud to them and having them do the same.
Volunteering with patients and working with special needs students taught me how to communicate well with others no matter their position. Most importantly both of these programs showed me how much I love helping people, it brought out a happy and caring version of me which is what persuaded me to join the medical field to become a nurse.
